- Current carrier: some plans include international coverage, but roaming charges can be high. Contact your carrier before traveling.
- eSIM: purchase and activate a digital SIM before or during the trip. It is the Beyond Travel recommendation for most travelers.
- Thai SIM card: physical SIMs with affordable data are available at airports and convenience stores.
- Hotel Wi-Fi: available at hotels, cafés, malls, and many restaurants; speeds vary.
- Save important numbers, addresses, hotel information, and offline maps on your phone.

Drinking water
Tap water is not recommended for drinking. Drink bottled or filtered water. Restaurant ice is generally safe. Use bottled water when brushing your teeth if you have a sensitive stomach.
Thailand has some of the fastest average internet speeds in Southeast Asia, with Wi-Fi widely available in hotels, cafés, malls, and many public areas.
Long-haul flight survival guide
Before boarding
- Download movies, music, and podcasts before you leave.
- Charge all devices fully.
- Bring a charging cable and power bank.
- Wear comfortable layers; cabin temperatures can vary.
During the flight
- Drink water regularly and get up to stretch every few hours.
- Adjust your watch to Thailand time after takeoff.
- Use moisturizer and lip balm for dry cabin air.

Jet lag

Power-bank safety: Spare lithium-ion batteries and power banks must stay in your personal item or carry-on, not checked baggage or an overhead storage bin. Remove them if your bag is gate-checked. Do not travel with a damaged, swollen, recalled, or unusually hot power bank. Most ordinary units up to 100 Wh are permitted; larger units may require airline approval.

Thai Airways baggage allowance: one checked bag up to 50 lb / 23 kg, one carry-on up to 15 lb / 7 kg, and one personal item. Oversized or overweight bags may incur additional fees.
Pack for comfort, not just photos. Choose breathable fabrics and neutral colors that mix and match. You'll walk more than you think, and less is truly more.
Things we wish someone had told us
- Weigh your bag before you go; Thai Airways allows one checked bag up to 50 lb / 23 kg plus a carry-on and personal item.
- Travel tissues are useful because they are not as common in Thai restrooms as in the U.S.
- Pack electrolyte packets for the heat, humidity, walking, and exploring.
- Comfortable shoes are non-negotiable for cobblestone streets, temples, markets, and malls.
- Temple attire matters: shoulders and knees should be covered. Keep a light scarf or shawl in your day bag.
- Thailand uses Type A, B, and C plugs with 220V. Bring a universal adapter with USB ports.
- Most hotels offer affordable same-day laundry service.
- A lightweight foldable duffel can hold souvenirs on the return.
- Download the Thai language pack in Google Translate and offline areas in Google Maps.
- Humidity is real. Bring travel-size hair products, leave-in conditioner, or anti-frizz serum that works for you.
Before you leave home
- Download offline maps and save your hotel, key places, and itinerary.
- Verify that your passport is valid for at least six months beyond your return.
- Weigh your luggage.
- Charge your phone, camera, power bank, and portable charger.
- Keep medications in your carry-on with original labels and prescription copies if needed.
- Share your travel dates and contact details with a trusted friend or family member.

Entering Thailand
U.S. passport holders
No tourist visa is required for this trip.
- Passport must be valid for at least six months beyond the date of entry.
- Two blank passport pages are required.
- Immigration officers may request proof of onward travel or accommodation; Beyond Travel will provide the necessary documentation.
Thailand Digital Arrival Card (TDAC)
- Every traveler must complete the TDAC before arriving.
- It replaces the old paper arrival form.
- Complete it online within three days before arrival.
- Beyond Travel will notify the group and provide step-by-step instructions.
